Mathmatics

In the fall of my freshman year of high school, my geometry teacher gave us each an unusual assignment: we were to create and paint a geometric design on the wall in the hallways on the math floor. I had a few small ideas, but somehow learned about a staff bathroom on that floor that had no windows and was basically abandoned. I asked if I could paint the whole bathroom with a giant math mural. Ideas came and went. I knew I wanted to incorporate many examples of geometry in nature in my painting. I asked all the teachers in the math department to tell me what their favorite math theorems were. The variety of answers that I got was inspiring and I realized that I needed to design something that was an “open ended” work: Something that I could add to over the years as I grew in my own knowledge and fascination with mathematics. Graffiti seemed to be the perfect theme for such a project.
